Why Being Inconsistent Is Harder Than Being Consistent
Consistency.
I know, you’re probably tired of seeing and hearing that word so much.
We all know it’s important, but it’s not exciting.
We rather go for a hack or some secret alternative method to get what we want, but without the struggle and discipline.
When things aren’t working in their favor, people rather look look for a new training program, a new trendy diet, or adjust their macros and training techniques. Maybe even throw in a new supplement.
But usually none of that is needed. They just need to be more consistent. Things aren’t working out for them because they aren’t consistently doing the things that’ll move them forward.
Nothing works well if you’re not consistent. So there’s no need to make any adjustments to anything you’re doing if you’re not even sticking with it long enough to measure progress and see change.
Think about it—do you really think the best training program and best nutrition plan will work if you only stick with it sometimes?
No, it won’t.
At first glance, the idea of being so consistent does sound difficult, but you know what’s way more difficult than being consistent?
Not being consistent.
Yup, that’s right.
You’re probably thinking “What?! If so many people struggle with being consistent, how is not being consistent more difficult than being consistent?”
Here’s how.
When you’re constantly inconsistent, you never make much progress.
And progress is a huge motivator for many people. You see your hard work paying off, which is a lot of fun.
You want to keep seeing progress and great results, getting closer and closer to your goals, so you keep doing what’s working—you’re being consistent.
You build momentum with consistency and the achievement of small goals, and once you get going it’s actually quite easy to continue being consistent.
The actions you take become habit, part of your routine, and part of who you are and what you do. You hardly have to think about it.
When you don’t see progress, which usually results from being inconsistent, it’s easy to get discouraged and frustrated. You lose that enthusiasm to go after your goals. You start slacking off more and more. You’re constantly starting and stopping, spinning your wheels, staying where you’re at and never making any noticeable progress.
Now that sounds difficult. A constant state of frustration. A lack of enthusiasm to do the things you say are important to you (but are they really important to you?). Not being where you want to be, not getting what you want, and always feeling discouraged.
That’s a lot more difficult than taking the small daily steps for weeks, months, and years. Seeing progress, getting the results you want, becoming the person you want to become, and building confidence by achieving goals you’ve set for yourself, and doing the things you said you were going to do.
The future rewards of consistency are absolutely worth it.
Have trouble getting started?
I bet you are. And that’s okay. I get it. That’s the hardest part—just getting started
Stop thinking, and just do.
Stop relying on motivation or waiting to feel a certain way to get started.
If you always rely on how you feel, you’ll never get much done.
Count down from five to zero, and get started.
Motivation follows action, not the other way around.
Then continue to do the things that are working, and do them as frequently as needed to get the outcome you want.
“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.” – Tony Robbins
